Just threading the string through the hole and winding downward works fine. These Martin strings are made from fluorocarbon, like some fishing line. The steel strings can be tuned then to match GCEA without any stress, or tight strings.   This way you dont have to learn new chord patterns and I dont think you miss out on any special sound that the mandolin has to offer. I don’t like high G reenterant C tuning on my baritone. To play an E Minor chord, put your index finger on the 4th string of the second fret, and your ring finger on the 3rd string of the fourth fret.

The small string gauges tend to pull through the bridge of my Uke's so it helps to sneak up on the right note when tuning. He was just the third Hawaiian-born player to play in the majors.
