One's behavior in the interim can supposedly alter a harsh decree, thus the period from the beginning of Rosh Hashanah to the conclusion of Yom Kippur is known as the Ten Days of Repentance. By contrast, thousands of years later, Israel or at least some of Israel was birthed again or born again. Until the children of Israel were settled in their land this was a tent that traveled around with them. So do we get the day off for the High Holidays?
