A similar argument was used by Hume to prove that knowledge of causal relations 'is not, in any instance, attained by reasoning's a priori '. ' The effect ', he says, 'is totally different from the cause, and consequently can never be discovered in it '. The distinction between analytic and synthetic judgments deals with whether what you say about a thing is already contained in the meaning of the thing. Even more fertile ground for comment, in recent years, has been Rousseau's proposal for the education of girls, developed in a section of the novel (Book V) that bears the name of the young woman who is destined to be Emile's soul-mate, Sophie.

It was written at the turn of the 20th century.   Answer Philosophy, as I understand it, is the study, among other things, of the nature of existence. It is not unreasonable to think that some of his descendants are still around today. They acquire transferable skills, such as the ability to reconstruct and analyse arguments, as well as an appreciation of the history of ideas. Street philosophers are concerned with life itself, and believe that people live by ideas and beliefs, not proofs and definitions.

I maintain that today's analytical philosophers confuse means and ends. Propositions true by "relations of ideas" are now analytic ("taking apart"), while propositions not so founded are synthetic ("putting together"). You needn't aim; just pull the trigger and you'll hit one. "Your question deserves a fuller answer than this; but that would be an article; or a book; or a lifetime; and I'm depressed enough already. The idea here is that (considered) intuitions, though indeed ‘synthetic’ and, as such, defeasible, represent good prima facie evidence for the philosophical views at issue, at least if those views are about the nature of concepts (see for instance Graham and Horgan 1994).
